BUS, WALK
Our trip to Wonju was a refreshing escape, a well-deserved break after a grueling week packed with exams. With Korea’s autumn foliage at its peak, we set out on Saturday, October 26th, excited to immerse ourselves in nature. We departed from Seoul early, expecting a two-hour bus ride to Wonju, but traffic extended our journey to over three hours, landing us in Wonju around noon. Once we arrived, our spirits were quickly lifted by a delicious lunch that prepared us for the adventures ahead. Our first stop was Chiaksan Mountain, where we took a short, 15-minute hike to the historical Guryongsa Temple. This ancient Buddhist temple, nestled at the foot of Chiaksan, is surrounded by lush pine forests and has a rich history that dates back to 668. Founded by the Great Master Uisang, Guryongsa Temple carries a mythical charm, its name translating to “Nine Dragons,” a reference to the legend of dragons that once lived in a pond on this very spot. The pond was eventually filled in to create a place for the temple, adding an air of mystique to its surroundings. One of the highlights was the nearby ancient ginkgo tree, whose golden leaves glistened in the autumn sun, casting a warm glow over the temple grounds. After soaking in the peaceful aura of the temple, we headed to Museum SAN, a modern art museum seamlessly integrated into nature. The museum, part of the Oak Valley Resort, offers an aesthetic balance between art and nature, providing several picturesque spots that make for perfect photos. The exhibits were fascinating, and the outdoor spaces offered scenic views that added to the serenity of the experience. We spent the night at Oak Valley Resort, where a cozy dinner brought us together to share stories and laughter. On the morning of October 27th, we checked out of the resort and hopped onto another bus, this time bound for Sogeumsan Valley. This beautiful valley is a treasure trove of scenic views and thrilling suspension bridges that stretch high over the valley floor, offering breathtaking, panoramic vistas of Korea’s autumn landscape. We spent the day hiking, taking countless photos of the stunning landscapes around us. Although some of our group were nervous about crossing the high bridges, we all found courage in each other’s company, and, with a mix of trepidation and exhilaration, everyone managed to make it across. The experience was both humbling and uplifting, a perfect way to end our autumn adventure in Wonju. Reflecting on the weekend, the trip was not only a journey through nature but also a meaningful cultural experience, blending Korea’s rich history with its modern expressions. From the timeless tranquility of Guryongsa Temple to the innovative design of Museum SAN, and the rugged beauty of Sogeumsan Valley, every aspect added a new layer of appreciation for the country’s natural and cultural heritage. It was the ideal getaway to refresh our minds and spirits before diving back into our routines.
Make sure to arrive early to the Sogeumsam Valley because it will be crowded during autumn.
