About your trip

My one-day trip to the Uisan Confucian Academy was a remarkable journey through Korea's rich history, centered around the fascinating figure of the seonbi—scholars who played an essential role during the Goryeo and Joseon periods. This immersive experience, coupled with traditional performances of dancing and singing, truly brought the past to life. The Uisan Confucian Academy, founded in 1610, provided the perfect backdrop for this exploration. Nestled in a serene location, the academy was a hub of Confucian scholarship, where students studied Confucian texts and rituals. I found it inspiring to learn about the seonbi, who were highly respected for their dedication to knowledge, moral integrity, and public service. A highlight of the trip was witnessing a performance that blended traditional dancing and singing, reflecting the values and culture of the seonbi. The performers, dressed in beautiful hanbos, brought the academy’s academic and cultural legacy to life with grace and elegance. One of the most memorable moments was the tea ceremony. We were invited to participate in a traditional tea time, which is an integral part of Confucian rituals. The calm and mindful atmosphere during the ceremony, with the careful brewing and serving of tea, was a perfect reflection of the scholarly and contemplative lifestyle of the seonbi. It was an opportunity to appreciate the history of the academy. Overall, the visit to the Uisan Confucian Academy was a beautifully orchestrated blend of education and tradition. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring Korea’s heritage.
